ITW Security Division’s Imagedata facility in Brantham has recently invested over £350,000 in new equipment to reduce the energy consumption of the site. The success of the project, which was completed in July, has already resulted in a reduction in the site’s gas consumption by 42%, its carbon footprint by 25% and will lower CO2 emissions by 600 tonnes each year.

The Brantham site is the UK’s and EU’s only producer of dye sublimation print ribbons, which are used to personalise ID cards, driving licences and other secure ID documents around the world. Previously the site had relied upon equipment installed in the mid 80’s and early 90’s for essential steam generation, site heating and VOC abatement services, which was very energy inefficient by today’s standards. As part of its commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its operations, and driven by ITW’s Enterprise Strategy and Toolbox approach, the business had been assessing options to dramatically reduce its carbon footprint culminating in the investment programme in late 2015 to change this.

Commenting on the investment Bob Carey, ITW Security Division’s Business Unit Manager said “The improvements at our Imagedata site represents a substantial reduction in our consumption of energy and resources and have transformed the sustainability of the site and our business going forward.”

The ITW Imagedata site employs around 40 people and exports almost 100% of its products worldwide. Since acquiring the business in 2010, ITW has invested substantially in transforming the productivity of the coating, slitting and finishing operations operated on site. This latest investment is a continuation in a series of ongoing projects aimed at driving sustainability and quality improvement in ITW Security Division’s manufacturing operations.

“We are located close to the Stour Estuary which is a designated Area of Natural Beauty and Site of Special Scientific Interest and our environmental impact and sustainability are therefore primary concerns for us” continued Bob. “We operate to the ISO 14001 Environmental System Standard across the site and as part of this we continuously work to lower the environmental impact of our operation in the manufacture of our leading range of ID card printer ribbons for customers worldwide.”
